The Sheep Shack

How wild it is, to be in nature.

BOOK NOW

The Sheep Shack has just been completed and is at the bottom of our beautiful nature rich valley. The Shack is situated on our small farm which is located on the coastal plateau so is perfectly situated to walk down to the secluded creeks of the harbour, the dramatic channel coastline and beaches, or Salcombe estuary.

This beautiful cabin was built by your host John with help from Kian and Ollie (from Black Dog Carpentry) using local wood and as many reclaimed items as possible. The doors came from a house in East Portlemouth, the floor is teak from a house in East Portlemouth. All the new wood came from Haldon Forest near Exeter.

Stand in the cabin and enjoy the seclusion that the valley offers. Sit on the veranda and read your book in complete peace, light a fire, let your children play in the meadow or the shallow brook. Alternatively head to the beach for the day in the knowledge you have somewhere incredible to come back to. This is a truly special little place.

  • What our guests say

A relaxing little spot at the bottom of the John and Liz's smallholding with nothing but the sound of a babbling brook and the occasional baabling sheep. Even though Salcombe was close-by, it was amazing to feel like you were in such a wild corner of Devon. The coastline around Gara Rock was absolutely stunning (and just a short walk from the cabin.

We had a wonderful stay in The Sheep Shack. We were met by the very friendly host and shown down to the lovely secluded accommodation in a beautiful setting. The Shack was even better than expected, well equipped, and very peaceful. We'd happily go back!

Just over half-an-hour away by foot, you'll find East Prawle, home to the famous Pigs Nose Inn and Piglet Stores village shop and cafe. Frequently asked questions

    • Where is the nearest shop?

From Meadow Barn Farm, you can get supplies by going to Salcombe on the foot ferry where there are shops, or make the half-hour walk to Piglet Stores in East Prawle. Head by car to the amazing farm shop at Stokely, the garage at West Charleton or the supermarkets in Kingsbridge.

On-site, we often have our own bacon, sausages and eggs available to buy.  We also buy in bottles of milk from Dartmouth dairy that you can also buy from us if you need it.

Make sure you bring some supplies for your first night.

    • How far are the beaches?

Gara Rock beach is about a 15-minute walk while the gorgeous sandy beaches of East Portlemouth are around a 25-minute walk away. Follow the link to find out more about the best beaches in South Devon.

    • Can we arrive by public transport?

If you don’t have a car you can get the train to Totnes, bus to Kingsbridge or Salcombe and we are happy to pick you up by prior arrangement.

We'll even knock 10% off your bill as a thank you for taking the eco-friendly option.

    • Is it easy to access Salcombe?

If you want to spend a lot of time in Salcombe it is easy during the day as there is a regular ferry that runs from a pier about 20-minutes’ walk away. In the evening it can be more challenging as the ferry stops though water taxis can be arranged in high season. If you have specific questions about local knowledge and access please call us and we will help where we can.

    • Are there places to eat and drink?

The nearest place for food and drink is the cafe and restaurant at the Gara Rock Hotel. For most of the year, there is a small cafe by the beach at East Portlemouth while slightly further afield is a huge choice of places to eat and drink.

    • Is there room for a family?

There is space for up to three children if you're happy to share beds and use futon mattresses on the floor.

Inside The Sheep Shack are two double beds, one on a mezzanine level which is accessed by a ladder. A single futon bed mattress can then be used on the floor.

Please be aware this will be ‘cabin living’, and you will all be in close quarters in the same room together.

    • Can we bring or hire bikes?

There are lots of opportunities to cycle down here so bring a bike if you like. The hills can be quite steep though, and the roads narrow.

We also have a selection of refurbished bikes that you're welcome to borrow or hire an electric bike for the day and explore all the best local spots without breaking a sweat.

Electric bikes can be hired on-site from www.bearland.co.uk

    • How do we get there?

Head to Meadow Barn Farm, TQ8 8PN and we will direct you to the Meadow, home to The Sheep Shack. If you are arriving by public transport, please contact us to arrange pickup from either Kingsbridge or Salcombe.

When arriving by car, it's best to avoid the tidal road which often floods and is in poor condition. Instead, head to Stokenham and follow the directions we'll provide from there.
